Flat Mountains :-) |
You can't go through all the troubles of driving on a gravel road just to miss the Sunrise. This is an opportunity of your lifetime to watch the sunrise while sitting on top of on of the highest dunes in the world, Dune 45. Dune 45 is some kilometers away from the Sesriem Gate so, If you are not driving be sure to be at the Sesriem Gate early say 5:30 am so that you can hitchhike to Dune 45, all cars passing through that gate are headed there.

After watching the beautiful sunrise, continue your journey to Deadvlei and Sossuvle, you will find a gate you can park your car and take the NWR shuttle to Deadvlei. There are rest rooms at the gate, so don't worry about the coffee or tea you had for breakfast. If you want to walk, you can it is not really far. This place is GOLD, BREATH TAKING and OUT of this world. Go see for yourself.
Sesriem Canyon isn't far from the Sesriem Gate, you might want to see it in the afternoon after you have rested and recovered from all the wonderful things you have seen in the morning.

Wear Closed shoes , don't be me :-) |
Finally, you wanna see the sunset while you are on top of the Dunes, it isn't far from the Gate which is good because the Gate close around 7pm, so you want to have more time admiring the sunset than rushing to get back before the gate closes. You can also bring your camping chair and drinks for a sun-dower with your loved ones or just yourself (like me).

6. Swimming
If you are staying at NWR Sesriem Camp, You have access to the swimming. I headed to the swimming pool after having lunch at the restaurant. I sat there for about 3 hours reading a book; looking at people swimming; and judging myself for not knowing how to swim.
Tips
- You are going to be in a desert, it gets really hot during the day and really cold at night. Pack appropriate clothes;
- Have your Sunscreen, guys! even black people get sunburns so please make sure you have a sunscreen on before you step out of your tent or room or car;
- Hat and Sun glass are MUST haves, you are going to be in a Desert;
- Pack a bottle of water, you'll never know when you might need water. Have IT. You will get dehydrated;
- Make sure you have all your basic necessities to avoid spending unnecessarily. There is a small shop and Gas station but as you can imagine, the prices are quite high;
- BUY alcohol, enough alcohol if you are like me. You don't want to run out of alcohol at 2 am when the Bar is closed, it is going to make the whole trip boring; and
- Be Happy :-)
Additional Tips
- You are going to drive on a gravel road, please please please make sure you reduce the Tyre's pressure to avoid unnecessary Tyre bursts;
- Pack enough water , at least 5 litters just in case you encounter problems with your car and you will have to wait to get assistance, you will be in a desert and it is HOT and there are very few cars on the road. Better be safe than Sorry.
- Strictly drive 80 km/hr that is if you want to see red dunes :-)
- BE happy!
